NATURAL VEGETATION AND ANIMAL LIFE
1. Why are evergreen forests called so? Where are they found in India?
            Since the trees of these forests are always green, they are called evergreen forests.
            In India the evergreen forests are found on the western side of the Western Ghats, the North -Eastern hills, and Andaman and Nicobar islands.
2) Which are the animals and birds found only in India?
            There are certain rare species found only in India: Swamp deer, chausinga-four horned antelope, Kashmir stag, black buck, Nilgai and the spotted deer.
Birds: Geese, mynahs, pigeons, parrots, peacocks, cranes, hornbills, sunbirds, etc.
           
II. 1. Why Tropical forests have commercial value?
Tropical evergreen forests have a lot of commercial value because a variety of valuable trees like ebony, mahogany, rosewood, cane, bamboos, sandalwood are found in these forests.
2. Forests are very important to us. Why?
 Forests are very important to us because they are useful in many ways.
·         Forests help in preserving ecological balance.
·         They prevent soil erosion and preserve the fertility of the soil.
·         Forests are home for various kinds of animals and birds, thus preserving bio-diversity.
·         They provide raw materials like timber, bamboo, cane, gum, medicinal plants, etc., to industries.
·         They provide moisture and lower the temperature.
·         They obstruct the rain-bearing winds and cause rainfall.
·         They provide animal sanctuaries.
·         They provide fodder to cattle.
3. The forests in the Ganges delta are called Sunderbans. Give reason? or Where do we find Sunderbans in India?
            In the forests of Ganges delta there are plenty of sundari trees. Therefore these forests are called Sunderbans.
4. Social forestry is gaining importance.Give reason.
            The government and people have become aware of the dangers of deforestation. They have understood the importance of forests. Hence social forestry is gaining importance.
5. Forests are being depleted. Give reason.
            Forests are being depleted due to large scale cutting of trees due to industrial development, cultivation of crops, overgrazing by cattle and construction of railways, roadways, irrigation and power projects. Due to increase in population, demand for forest products has increased. So, there is a great need to protect forests.
6. What is eco system?
The climate and relief have an effect on the flora and fauna. The natural vegetation and animal life of a country are closely inter-linked and form what is known as ecosystem.
7. Name the national parks of Karnataka.
The Bandipur, Nagarahole and Bannerghatta are the national parks of Karnataka.
8. Name the natural vegetation of India.
There are six natural vegetation.
1. Tropical evergreen forest
2. Tropical deciduous forest
3. Tropical Thorn and Shrub forest
4. Desert vegetation
5. Mangrove forest
6. Himalayan forest
